The Code Enforcement Officer issues building permits, inspects construction and enforces the New York State building and fire codes and the town Zoning Law.
Do I need a permit?
You need a building permit for:
- New homes, additions and garages
- Sheds and accessory buildings over 144 square feet
- Decks more than 30 inches above the ground
- Swimming pools deeper than 24 inches
- Woodstoves, solar panels and changes to plumbing or structure
You do not need a permit for roofing, siding, painting, flooring or kitchen cabinets.
How to apply
- Fill out the building permit application.
- Include a plot plan showing distances to property lines and two sets of plans.
- Drop it off at Town Hall or mail it. Most permits are issued within ten business days.
Zoning questions
If your project needs a variance or site plan review, the Code Enforcement Officer will refer it to the Zoning Board of Appeals or the Planning Board.
